SMH Ranked America’s Highest Performing Safety Net Hospital for Hip & Knee Replacement

SARASOTA (Jan. 11, 2017) – Sarasota Memorial Hospital was ranked America’s highest performing safety net hospital for total hip & knee replacements in 2016, according to an assessment by Modern Healthcare.

SMH received the highest score in both clinical areas based on a review of inpatient data collected from all hospitals from 2012 to 2014 by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). Modern Healthcare analyzed a subset of that publicly reported data for the nation’s safety net hospitals (defined as those providing at least 0.1% of the nation’s charity care). It published the top five highest performers in the nation, with Sarasota Memorial ranked #1.

But Sarasota Memorial doesn’t just top the quality charts for safety net hospitals. According to the latest update on CMS’ Hospital Compare website (Dec. 2016), Sarasota Memorial was listed among the top three hospitals for hip/knee surgery in Florida and among the top 50 in the nation for demonstrating the lowest (best) readmission rates. Hospital Compare’s analysis included 166 hospitals in Florida and 3,473 hospitals nationwide. Sarasota Memorial also was the only hospital in Florida to earn CMS’ highest 5-Star rating for overall care in the December 2016 update.

“At Sarasota Memorial, our mission is to provide safe, high quality care to every patient, every day,” said Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder. “We’re very proud of our orthopedic team and the exceptional care they provide for our community.”Sarasota Memorial’s high caliber team of orthopedic surgeons and multi-disciplinary specialists help patients navigate every step of their treatment process, from pre-operative education and surgery preparation to post-operative home care, skilled nursing and customized orthopedic rehabilitation.

Sarasota Memorial’s team also includes two board-certified orthopedic traumatologists to handle the most challenging orthopedic emergencies, as well as an orthopedic nurse navigator to ensure patients have all the support and resources they need before, during and after surgery to ensure the best outcome possible.
